The formula student (or Formula SAE outside europe) competition is a racing / engineering series, which challenge teams of different university students to conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small, formula style, autocross vehicles.

To give the maximum design flexibility, the rules of the series gives very few restrictions on the overall vehicle design. The main part of the rules is intended to issue concerns about safety and explain the different events at the competitions.

The main design objective for the vehicles in the series is to have a very high performance in terms of acceleration, braking and handling and be sufficiently durable to successfully complete all the events at the competition.

The competition is subdivided into different events, both static representing the engineering part and dynamic representing the racing (and testing) part.
